# Cutting and pasting with Photoshop

Using Photoshop's _layers,_ or component groups, enables you to manipulate your image as a whole. You can use the Layers panel, or you can use the Layers command on the Control panel. You can also use layers to flatten your image and then edit each layer, one at a time.

## Cutting

Creating a new layer (or layers) in Photoshop is pretty easy; just press and hold the Ctrl (Win) or ⌘ (Mac) key while you click on your image. After you press Ctrl (Win) or ⌘ (Mac), the image opens up, or _blurs,_ in Photoshop, and a new layer box appears where you can draw the selection box. To create a new layer, click the new layer icon at the top of the Layers panel. Figure 6-7, left, shows the Layers panel and the new layer icon. You can't make a selection on an image with just the Layers panel, but you can when the image is blurred.

After you create a new layer, each layer below your selection appears in the Layers panel. Figure 6-7, right, shows a layer in the panel with the layer at the top set to _Blend if Needed._ You can change the settings of each layer by clicking on the layer icon in the Layers panel. You can also change the blending mode by clicking on the icon at the right end of a selected layer and then choosing a blending mode from the drop-down menu that appears.

Some surprising results have been uncovered by a national survey on accessibility, accessibility barriers and the skills and attitudes of Canadians when it comes to their own disabilities.

An online survey was done by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Alliance (AOADA) in August 2016 and launched on Friday at an event in Toronto.

Participants were asked 30 questions about accessibility barriers in a number of areas, like housing, employment, transportation, education, recreation, government services, and the law.

The sample group includes people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, cognitive, hearing, mobility, and communication.

“When we think about accessibility, it can be as simple as something as low as a ramp where there is a curb cut, that’s accessible, or something as complex as a lift up into an apartment,” said AOADA spokesperson, Stephanie Atkinson.

“We wanted to focus on what can be done to overcome barriers, and what we’ve uncovered is there is a lot of work still needed across the country.”

Less than one-third of respondents said they had taken part in a job interview after disclosing their disability, and more than half of Canadians have no formal or informal supports or strategies to ensure they are able to work in their chosen profession.

And, more than 85 per cent of Canadians don’t know what their rights are if they are discriminated against at work.

While 35 per cent of Canadians with disabilities said they are concerned about accessing government services, only 18 per cent of Canadians with disabilities had access to a hearing aid or a sight-related device, according to the results.

Many felt hindered by accessibility barriers in a variety of ways, like mobility issues, mental health, or being in a crowded place.

“We found people were also facing barriers to education,” said Atkinson.

“More than half of our respondents had been turned down for a government grant or loan because they had a disability.”

Corticosteroid-loaded microspheres for nasal administration: poly(lactide) copolymers made by ring-opening polymerization.
A novel approach was investigated to obtain small stable microspheres (2.4 microns) loaded with corticosteroids (dexamethasone and betamethasone) using (R)-lactide-based poly(L-lactide)s as matrix. The microspheres were prepared in the presence of a single emulsifying agent, tween-80, by a ring-opening polymerization method. The drug loading varied from 3.2% to 3.4%, depending on the type of corticosteroid and was influenced by the molar ratio of the reacting monomeric units in the copolymer. The water content of the microspheres ranged from 1.4% to 1.8%. The effect of water on the loading efficiency of microspheres was studied using various water contents and microspheres were observed by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy to determine the morphology of the microspheres. The release profiles for dexamethasone and betamethasone from the microspheres followed the Higuchi diffusion equation, indicating that release from the microspheres was controlled by the diffusion of drug molecules through the polymer matrix. The release of dexamethasone and betamethasone from the microspheres was faster at lower water content, which was similar to the release profile from the hydrogel used as a control. In addition, the thickness of the film surrounding the hydrophobic microspheres was quantified by atomic force microscopy.Zobawk
