Adobe Photoshop Elements is a lesser-known version of Photoshop that offers basic editing capabilities (cropping, resizing, and recoloring) along with access to tools such as "The Bridge" (for organizing images and sharing them through the Internet) and "Smart Filters" (for modifying colors, vignettes, and grain).

The most powerful feature in Adobe Photoshop, however, is that layers allow for placement of bits of a single photograph on top of one another. The layers allow for combining layers of different or similar images into a single file. This enables you to blend or alter elements of one image over another.

Only in Photoshop can you go beyond Adobe's Color Separations filter to combine layers of pictures and objects into one enhanced image, which enables you to create beautiful images that would be impossible to create with just a pair of photographs. Using Photoshop and Elements, you can use Photoshop filters (like Architectural), Smart Filters (to enhance colors), and even create your own filters, among many other features.

Mastering the powerful Photoshop Creative Suite

The term Creative Suite refers to programs in the Adobe line that allow you to work on photography, graphic design, and illustration. The programs include (in addition to Photoshop) Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop Elements. In addition, you can access these tools through Adobe Bridge. You can design a website, create a brochure, and, most impressively, create a cover and full-page graphic artwork using InDesign. As mentioned earlier, you can also create images with Elements and then easily share them with others.

Although you can use Photoshop with Elements (and its modest features), the Creative Suite offers the most powerful tools for photography, graphic design, and web work. With just one program, you can create incredible images that would have been impossible to create on your own (even if you're a photoshop wizard).

A common complaint about Photoshop is that the interface is complicated and seems difficult to work with. Well, yes, it is a bit complicated, but don't let this turn you away from the program. There are innumerable tutorials and how-to guides that provide simplified instructions for using the program. And should you need additional support, there are many organizations that offer training for Photoshop and the Creative Suite.

The last couple of years have taught me not to buy into the hype on Linux systems. Buy a box on the cheap and it will run anything - websites, gaming, development, just about anything. But the moment you think you need a server to run a critical application, you look at the price and all but close the system door.

Then again, sometimes you're right. I was recently testing out an AMD video capture card, and here's what I learned. I started off with a bare-bones 64 bit Linux system. A GTX 460 is no slouch, at least in the 3D realm, and here's how it stacked up against a more robust (and expensive) system.

It took an obscene amount of patience to make the video work, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It can help you get a fix on where the fault lies, or perhaps just figure out why the application doesn't work as expected. So, with a $100 netbook and a$100 PC running Linux Mint as a desktop, it's time to take a look.

I started off with a bootable DVD of Mint. The first thing that was obvious was the lack of Nvidia support, and the hardware support for the Intel X3100 Express chipset. But the video was supported.

So, without further ado, let's set things up.

This is what my 64 bit Mint system looked like:

The other box was a typical Intel-based and Windows 7 system. It was a bit faster overall, but the less expensive hardware just didn't cut it. Here's what the Intel based system looked like:

Next was up were the settings, and the other card was bare:

Next was the less expensive hardware:

I loaded up the Microsoft Mediashare PlayOnLinux software on both systems:

On both, the streaming worked, but there was significant trouble with the picture quality. I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong. It wasn't the network, it was the video playback of the stream. So, I tried the alternate software.

On Mint, PlayOnLinux played the video flawlessly. In fact, it was so clean and easy to use, that I moved it to my full-time PC. On the other hand, PlayOnLinux failed to playback the video content. Not all video was played, or all video playback was completely wrong.

Using fMRI in evaluative decision-making: effects of cocaine and reversal learning.
The effects of cocaine on fMRI brain responses were examined in a task requiring a classically conditioned fear response in humans. In a conditioning phase, two separated presentations of a conditioned stimulus (CS, audiotaped face) were paired with an aversive, painful unconditioned stimulus (US, electrical stimulation). After conditioning, in a reversal phase, the CS was paired with an innocuous, pleasant US. During the conditioning phase, subjects performed the same action (clicking with a hand press) during the acquisition, extinction, and reversal phases. Using an event-related fMRI design, during extinction, CS presentation produced brain activity in the anterior insula, whereas presentation of the CS during reversal produced activity in the orbitofrontal cortex. Cocaine, during both extinction and reversal, produced a decrease in fMRI responses in the anterior insula, which was greater during extinction than during reversal. These results suggest a dissociation in the processing of extinguished and reversed conditioned stimuli.// RUN: llvm-mc -filetype=obj -triple x86_64-pc-linux-gnu %s -o - | llvm-objdump -triple=i386-pc-linux-gnu - | FileCheck %s
